Ilgen Falls on the Baptism River

Went up north again. Pretty good weather most of the time. This trip was more about camping with and old friend, but we hit some of the same falls I did last last time as well as a couple new spots.
This was my first time out with a pro grade tripod. I really loved the stability but I still found plenty of other ways to botch shots. 😉 Did get some good ones though.
My wife has an orchid I thought I should try to capture before the blooms fall off. I screwed around for quite a while and just couldn’t get the lighting the way I wanted it. I still got a pretty nice shot though.

Temperance River

Went up north to shoot waterfalls and scout Superior National Forest campgrounds as opposed to the State Park campgrounds. This trip was in the middle of a heat wave and conditions were great. Got to a lot of spots that are off the beaten path and inland of Highway 61. The routine was shoot the falls, jump in the river to cool off then drive to the next spot. Doesn’t get any better than that.

To get jump started learning my new camera I attended Bryan Hansels’ Spring Waterfall Photography workshop at Lutsen Resort. As the weather turned out, it actually ended up being an additional winter photography class. It was 19° F when we went out Sunday morning at dawn! At times the conditions were basically impossible. At Pigeon Falls we had both spray and snow blowing straight into our faces. Still did manage to get a few nice shots.

Rainbow over Father Baraga’s CrossJuly 2007
This is the Cross River on Minnesota’s North Shore. I was tormenting one of our dogs by making him wade the river with me. (He didn’t like water deeper than 6″.) Good thing I had a camera in my pocket. Not bad for a 1.3MP point & shoot.
(Seemed like a good picture to start the blog.)
